BREAKING: Nigerian Military Sentences 54 Soldiers To Death For Mutiny

Featured

A military court in Nigeria has sentenced 54 soldiers to death after they were found guilty of mutiny.

The soldiers were convicted Wednesday in Abuja on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy to commit mutiny. Represented by Femi Falana (SAN), the brunt of the defense’s case boldly argued that the soldiers were not guilty of mutiny as accused.

“My Lords, contrary to the general belief in military circles, protest by soldiers does not constitute mutiny,” Falana argued in his defense, obtained by SaharaReporters. Imploring the court to uphold precedent as established in the case Cpl Segun Oladele & 22 Ors. v Nigerian Army supra, Falana said “Can we safely conclude that the prosecution has proved all the ingredients in this charge of mutiny against the accused soldiers?”

“The answer is in the negative,” he said.

“In the instant case, the Prosecution did not prove that the order given to carry out a military act followed the standard or proper procedure of giving such an order; that the accused soldiers deliberately and by collusion disobeyed the order; that the disobedience and the acts strike at the foundation of discipline in the Army; that the accused persons used violence or threat of violence; and that the acts of the convicts ‘were deliberately designed to put the Nigerian Army in imminent danger’.”

Despite a thorough 48-page defense, the 54 soldiers were sentenced to death today.

Four other soldiers were acquitted.

Why Nigeria cancelled US military training – Nigerian Federal govt

Why Nigeria cancelled US military training – FG

on December 05, 2014 / in News 12:46 am

By Caleb Ayansina

ABUJA—The Federal Government, yesterday, gave reason for the cancellation of the training of Nigerian soldiers by American security experts, attributing it to logistic problem.

The U.S. Government, through its Embassy in Abuja on Monday said in a statement that “At the request of the Nigerian government, the United States will discontinue its training of a Nigerian Army battalion.”

But Nigerian government explained that it did not cancel the training, but that the condition placed down by US government was not healthy for the security of lives and property of its citizens, particularly those in the north east region.

The conditions, according to it, include withdrawing of some military equipment from the battle field, so that the American could use them to train the soldiers.

The Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, who stated this during a routine briefing on security situation in the country, in Abuja, said the government would not expose its citizens at the mercy of insurgents because it wants to train its solders.

However, Omeri maintained that the two countries were not at variance as being insinuated by some people in the country. “Nigeria and America have strong military relation till date. It’s still ongoing and strong,” he said, disclosing that Nigerian soldiers had concluded two phases of the training out of the three.

Omeri explained that the third phase had to do with logistical components which the Americas did not provide but instead relied on Nigerian Military equipments, which was currently in use in the troubled states.

Boko Haram Submits List Of Men To Be Exchanged For Chibok Girls

Representatives of the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents may have submitted a list of its men it wants the Federal Government to release in exchange for the abducted school girls seized at the
Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State in April, a Punch report said.

The process of verification of the status of the men on the list has also started, the report quoted a security source as saying. This verification is to ascertain the state of health of the Boko Haram men. The source, according to the report, claims that the on-going talks with representatives of the insurgents
in the Chadian capital have witnessed great progress, claiming there had been other meetings at three different locations held in the spirit of the ongoing peace deal.

He dismissed fears that the insurgents may decide to back out of the negotiations because of recent confrontations with security forces.

“We have made a big progress, a very big progress on the issue of the on-going negotiations. But these are not the right time to discuss details”, the source said.

The source also refuted claims in the media that there were abductions recently in Yola, Madagali and other towns in Borno State, adding that the
security agencies had decided not to talk on the negotiations until the set objectives had been achieved.

The source said: “The media should show some restraint in reporting this matter; this thing is about the country; people should not report this negotiation with sensationalism. You know how sensitive it is.

“Another thing you must note is that many of the reports about this negotiation are false; they are not true”.

WoW ! Boko Haram Negotiates Cease fire,0 Chibok Girls Release In S’arabia

Islamist militant group Boko Haram is in talks with the federal government to release more than 200 girls abducted six months ago and negotiate a cease-fire to a deadly insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives.

An adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan and a man calling himself the secretary- general of Boko Haram told VOA Thursday that discussions are under way in Saudi Arabia, aided by high level officials from Chad and Cameroon.

Boko Haram’s Danladi Ahmadu, who is in Saudi Arabia, said the girls are “in good
condition and unharmed.” Ahmadu would not elaborate on the conditions
under which the girls would be freed.

Riyadh is not involved in the negotiations. On April 14, dozens of Boko Haram fighters stormed a secondary school in the remote northeastern village of Chibok, kidnapping around 270 girls. Fifty-seven managed to escape.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau later threatened to sell the remainder as slave brides, vowing they would not be released until militant prisoners were freed from jail.

President Goodluck Jonathan has been criticized at home and abroad for his slow response to the kidnapping and for the inability of Nigerian troops to quell the violence by the militants, seen as the biggest security threat to Africa’s top economy and leading energy producer.

WoW ! Cameroon reported that 27 Boko Haram Hostages Released

Cameroon’s president has announced that 27 hostages, including 10 Chinese workers, held by suspected Boko Haram militants have been released.

Also freed was the wife of Cameroon’s Vice-Prime Minister Amadou Ali President Paul Biya said that the hostages, seized in May and June close to the Nigeria border, were all safe.

Boko Haram is seeking to establish an Islamist state in Nigeria just like their contingent the dreaded ISIS but its fighters often cross the long and porous border with Cameroon. Many Nigerian civilians in border towns have fled to Cameroon to escape Boko Haram attacks, which have been heated up in recent months.

In June, Cameroon, Nigeria, Chad and Niger agreed on an allegiance to form a 2,800-strong regional force to tackle Boko Haram militants. Cameroon has reinforced its troops in its northern regions.

President Biya said in a statement on state radio:
“The 27 hostages kidnapped on May 16, 2014, at Waza and on July 27, 2014, at Kolofata were given this night to Cameroonian authorities.

“Ten Chinese, the wife of the Vice Prime Minister Amadou Ali, the Lamido (a local religious leader) of Kolofata, and the members of their families kidnapped with them are safe.”

WoW ! Hundreds Of Boko Haram Terrorist Killed In Adamawa

Hundreds of Boko Haram terrorists feared killed in Adamawa. A fierce gun duel is taking place between members of the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents and Nigerian troops who have been intensifying efforts to reclaim territories
captured by the insurgents in Adamawa Northern zone.

Reports from the area indicate that about 200 insurgents may have been killed in this latest offensive forcing
them to retreat as Nigerian troops took control of Michika.

According to a source, “the Nigerian troops have gained an upper hand in the ongoing war to rout the insurgents out of
Michika town which has been under the grip of the insurgents for close to a month.

“Nigerian troops are advancing towards Gulak in consolidation of the success they have made but the insurgents
launched an offensive against them leading to the fierce battle between
the two sides which is on as at the time of filling this report.”

Another source from Michika said Nigerian troops entered the town following a phenomenal success they made against the insurgents who suffered severe casualties.

“The Nigerian troops have gained entry into Michika and are now fully in control of the town having killed a lot of them (the insurgents),” the source said.
The sources, however, added that it has not been an easy feat for the Nigerian troops as they are facing stiff resistance
from the insurgents as they advance towards Gulak.

He added that that both sides have been in a prolonged gun duel as many insurgents and ammunitions were
deployed to counter the troops.

“There is heavy fighting between the insurgents and Nigerian troops as the insurgents are doing everything to frustrate the effort of the Nigerian troops and many people who are trapped in the towns are now sneaking out following
intensified fighting,” our source said.

“The gallant Nigerians soldiers were attacked from the back by the militants but the military men engaged them in
a fierce battle for over five hours back.”

Efforts to get the reaction of the Public Relations Officer of the 23rd Army Brigade in Yola failed. His telephone phone line was not reachable.
